AUTO Mechanics: a System for Building AUTOnomy

AUTO Mechanics gives young people the tools to advocate for themselves — clearly, calmly, and confidently — while navigating the real complexities of identity and pressure. This agency model is an intuitive, non‑clinical, simulation‑based system that gamifies new‑world skill‑building and decision‑making to enhance belonging, resilience, and wellbeing throughout the transitions of adolescence.

Teens, parents and youth‑serving organizations consistently report the same challenges:

  • Social pressure is intense
  • Communication between youth and adults can break down quickly
  • Young people lack tools to advocate for themselves
  • Identity exploration is happening earlier, faster, and with more complexity
  • Peer spaces are often where identity is tested — but peers lack structure to support each other safely

AUTO gives youth tools to navigate:

  • identity that is evolving but is treated as fixed
  • competing pressures from peers, parents, and institutions
  • moments where they lack language or feel dismissed

AUTO’s core sequence — Separate → Run → Reveal — helps youth map what’s happening, understand why, and choose their next move with clarity.

AUTO builds agency capacity, not compliance. Youth who use AUTO can gain:

  • clarity about what’s theirs vs external pressure
  • confidence in their identity and needs
  • tools to advocate for themselves
  • improved communication with adults
  • reduced overwhelm during complex moments
  • stronger belonging in peer and community spaces
